A screenshot and an interactive demo are made from the same raw material -- a picture of your screen -- and are used for completely different things. Sending one where the other belongs is a small, common waste: a twelve-step walkthrough delivered as twelve screenshots, or a single error message delivered as a three-minute video.
The rule is short: choose by what the recipient has to do next.
A column of numbered screenshots asks the reader to hold the previous ones in their head while reading the next. Interactive demos do not: each step is where the last one left off, and the reader is the one clicking. They also update in one place when the interface changes, where eight screenshots need eight reshoots.
A demo of one screen is a screenshot with a Next button and a loading spinner. It is heavier to make, heavier to open, and the format promises a sequence that never arrives. Take the screenshot.
Demorta’s extension records interactive demos, and its bar also has a Screenshot button that captures the area you drag and opens it in a small editor -- because the same person needs both, often on the same afternoon. The screenshot tool is free with a free account; try it here. The demo recorder is what the rest of this site is about.
