What to Send Instead of the First Client Call

August 28, 2026

The first call with a prospective client is almost always the same call, and almost always the one nobody thinks to change, because it feels like the start of a relationship.

It is usually the start of a recital. The relationship starts on the second call, when there is something specific to discuss.

What the first call actually contains

  • Who you are and what you do -- five minutes, identical every time.
  • How you work -- ten minutes, identical every time.
  • Examples of past work, described because you cannot show them on a call.
  • Their situation -- the genuinely valuable part, usually last and rushed.

Send the first three, keep the fourth

A short set of material covering who you are, how you work and what you have built removes fifteen minutes of every first call and communicates it better, because a walkthrough of past work beats describing it.

What remains is a conversation about them, which is the part that decides whether the work happens.

Ask for something small in return

A prospect who has watched your material and answers three short questions before the call arrives qualified, and you arrive prepared.

Keep it to three. A form asking twelve questions before a first conversation reads as bureaucratic and loses the people you wanted.

When to keep the introductory call

Referrals and inbound from somebody senior are different — those people expect a conversation and removing it reads as coldness rather than efficiency.

The material still helps there. Send it after the call rather than instead of it, so what you said travels to whoever else is deciding.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace the first client call entirely?
Most of it. Who you are, how you work, and examples of past work are identical every time and communicate better as material -- a walkthrough beats describing something you cannot show on a call. What remains is a conversation about their situation.
Should I ask prospects to fill in a form first?
Three questions, not twelve. A short set answered after they have seen your material means they arrive qualified and you arrive prepared; a long form before a first conversation reads as bureaucratic and loses the people you wanted.
When should I keep the introductory call?
For referrals and senior inbound, where a conversation is expected and removing it reads as coldness. Send the material after that call instead, so what you said travels to whoever else is involved in deciding.
