Running New Business Calls Without Losing Your Week

August 28, 2026

Every small agency has the same cycle: a busy month means no time for new business, so the following month has no pipeline, so there is time for new business again.

The cycle exists because selling is done entirely through calls, which are the one thing that cannot flex around delivery work.

What has to be a call and what does not

A first conversation with somebody who does not yet know whether they need you is mostly informational, and information can be sent.

A conversation about their specific situation, budget and timing is genuinely a call. Treating both the same way is what fills the calendar.

Build the pitch once

  • Your process, as a short walkthrough rather than a slide.
  • Two or three past projects, shown, with what was actually delivered.
  • How you price, at least in shape.
  • What working with you is like -- the thing prospects are really assessing.

It works while you are delivering

A link sent in response to an enquiry keeps a prospect warm during the week you cannot take a meeting. That is the specific failure that produces the feast-and-famine cycle.

Being able to say "here is how we work, have a look, let us talk next Tuesday" is the difference between a lead surviving a busy fortnight and going elsewhere.

Do not automate the part that wins

Agencies win work on trust and on understanding the client's situation better than the next agency. Neither is achievable through material.

The point of removing the informational calls is to have time for the ones where that happens, not to sell without talking to anybody.

Frequently asked questions

How do agencies keep a pipeline while delivering?
By moving the informational part of selling out of calls. A first conversation with somebody who does not yet know whether they need you is mostly information, and information can be sent -- which keeps leads warm during weeks when no meeting is possible.
What causes the feast-and-famine cycle?
Selling done entirely through calls, which cannot flex around delivery work. A busy month means no time for new business, so the next month has no pipeline, so there is time for new business again.
Can an agency sell without calls?
Not entirely, and it should not try. Agencies win on trust and on understanding a client's situation better than the next agency, and neither happens through material. Removing informational calls is what creates time for the ones that win.
