In a competitive pitch, a larger agency beats you on every axis the client is used to measuring: headcount, logos, process documents, insurance.
The one thing they cannot do is spend unbilled hours making something specific for a pitch they might lose. Their economics forbid it. Yours do not, and that is the whole opening.
Everyone in the room will present a methodology. A demo of the client's own product or site, already built, changes what the meeting is about within the first minute — from "who would we hire" to "this person has already started".
It is also the fastest possible proof of the thing small agencies claim and cannot evidence: that the client will deal with someone who actually does the work.
It will be raised, in the room or after: what happens if you are ill, what happens if you are busy. Refusing to address it does not make it go away, it makes it the thing they discuss once you have left.
Say plainly what your capacity is, who covers you, and what the client would do if you disappeared. A small agency that answers this cleanly is more reassuring than one that changes the subject — and a large agency's honest answer is often worse, since the team who pitched is rarely the team who delivers.
Unbilled pitch work is a real cost, and doing it for every enquiry is how small agencies end up busy and unprofitable. Reserve it for pitches where you are one of two or three, the budget is real, and the client has actually spoken to you.
For an open call with eight agencies and a form, send the proposal and move on. The asymmetry above only works when there is someone to notice it.
