What Is a Click-Through Demo?

August 22, 2026

A click-through demo is a captured copy of a real product that a viewer advances themselves, step by step, in a browser, without an account and without installing anything.

Each step is a screen from the real product, usually with a caption and a marker showing what to click next.

A real click-through demo — the Demorta editor, in 20 steps. Advance it yourself.

How it differs from the alternatives

  • Versus a video: the viewer controls the pace and can skip; a video plays at yours. A demo also reports which step people stopped on rather than a timeline position.
  • Versus a live demo: it happens without you, at 11pm, and reaches everyone who was not on the call.
  • Versus a free trial: no signup, no setup, no data of their own -- and no ability to test their own edge case either.
  • Versus an in-app product tour: a tour runs inside your real product for logged-in users and needs code shipped into it; a click-through demo runs outside and needs none.

How one is made

A browser extension records your product as you click through it, capturing each screen and where you clicked. You then edit: remove weak steps, write captions, blur anything sensitive, and publish.

Nothing is installed into the product being recorded, which is why this can be done by marketing without an engineering ticket — and why it works on products you do not own.

What they are used for

  • On a website, so visitors understand the product before signing up.
  • In sales, sent before or after a call, and forwarded to people who never attended.
  • In support, answering "how do I…" more completely than a paragraph.
  • In onboarding and training, internally as well as for customers.

What they cannot do

A click-through demo is not the live product. Nobody can explore freely, test an integration, or use their own data — that is what a sandbox or a trial is for.

It also has to be re-recorded when the interface changes, which is the real ongoing cost and the reason demos quietly go stale.

Frequently asked questions

What is a click-through demo?
A captured copy of a real product that a viewer advances themselves, step by step, in a browser, with no account and nothing installed. Each step is a real screen, usually with a caption and a marker showing what to click next.
How is a click-through demo different from a video?
The viewer controls the pace and can skip to what they care about, where a video plays at yours. A demo also reports which step people stopped on, which is actionable in a way a timeline position is not.
Do click-through demos require code in your product?
No. A browser extension records the product from the outside, so nothing is installed into the application. That is why marketing can make one without an engineering ticket, and why it works on products you do not own.
