A sandbox is a real, running instance of your product, seeded with demo data, that a prospect can log into and use freely. It is the most authentic thing you can offer and the most expensive.
A demo is a recording. It is less authentic, far cheaper, and frequently converts better.
Genuine exploration. A technical evaluator who wants to try an edge case, test an integration, or poke at the API cannot do that in a recording, and telling them to book a call is a poor answer.
For complex, high-value products with a real evaluation phase, a sandbox is often necessary and worth its cost.
Everywhere earlier in the funnel. A sandbox requires signup, orientation and time; a demo requires a click and 60 seconds. Most visitors will never do the first.
A demo also controls the story. In a sandbox a prospect wanders, finds an unfinished corner, and forms an impression you did not intend. That risk is real and rarely priced in.
Demo first, sandbox for the ones who ask. The demo qualifies and orients; the sandbox serves the small number who genuinely need to touch it.
That also cuts sandbox cost, because far fewer people need one when the basic questions were already answered.
