Plenty of people search for a "free demo trial" as one phrase. It is not one thing, and the confusion is expensive in both directions: buyers book calls when they wanted access, and vendors hand out trials to people who wanted ten minutes of orientation.
The distinction is simple once stated. A demo is someone showing you the product. A trial is you using it. Free applies to both, and they cost you completely different amounts of your own time.
If you are still deciding whether a category of tool is worth having, you want a demo. A trial at this stage burns a weekend proving something a two-minute walkthrough would have told you.
If you have shortlisted two or three tools and need to know which handles your edge case, you want a trial. A demo at this stage shows you the happy path, which is exactly the part you already believe.
The order matters: demo to shortlist, trial to decide. Reversing it is the single most common way evaluations overrun.
For a long time a free demo meant a scheduled call, because showing the product required a person to drive it. That is why the phrase carries a faint dread -- what is being offered is a meeting, and the demo is the pretext.
Self-serve interactive demos changed that. A vendor can now put the guided walkthrough directly on the page, no form and no calendar, and reserve the call for buyers who have a specific question. If a site only offers the calendar, that tells you something about how they sell.
Putting a self-serve demo in front of the trial does not cannibalise signups. It filters them. People who would have signed up, poked around for four minutes and vanished get their answer from the demo instead, and the ones who start a trial arrive knowing what they are looking for.
That shows up as a lower signup count and a higher activation rate, which is the trade worth making. Judge it on activated accounts, not registrations.
