How to Screenshot a Chart From a Dashboard for a Report or Slide

Charts get screenshotted constantly -- from analytics tools, finance dashboards, admin panels -- and pasted into slides, reports and messages. The captures are usually a little blurry, a little cropped, and missing the axis label that made the chart mean something.

Set the chart up first

Widen the browser so the chart renders at a comfortable size; dashboards squash charts at narrow widths.
Pick the date range and filters before capturing, and make sure they are visible in the image or noted next to it.
Hover off the chart so no tooltip is in the way -- unless the tooltip value is the point, in which case capture it deliberately.
Light theme, unless the report is dark. A dark chart on a white slide looks like a hole.

Capture the region at full resolution

Drag the area around the chart, including its title and axis labels. Make it stand alone

A chart in a slide is read without the dashboard around it. Either capture the title and the date range with it, or add a one-line label in the editor: what the chart shows and for which period. A box around the interesting movement helps; an arrow at a single point helps more.

When a screenshot is the wrong format

If the audience will want to change the range or hover for values, they need the dashboard, not a picture of it. Send the link with the filters in the URL. If they need to be walked through several views in order, an interactive demo of the dashboard is easier to follow than a deck of screenshots.
