How to Crop a Screenshot in the Browser (No App Needed)

September 20, 2026

Cropping is the single most common edit made to a screenshot, and on most machines it involves opening a second application, finding the crop tool, dragging, saving, and finding the saved file. For an edit that takes two seconds of actual work, that is a lot of overhead.

Crop by capturing less

Area capture is a crop you make before the screenshot exists. Win + Shift + S, Cmd + Shift + 4, or a browser tool’s drag-to-select all let you take only the region you want. Get in the habit and most crops disappear.

Crop after the fact, in the browser

Demorta’s screenshot editor has a Crop tool: drag the region, press Apply crop, and the image is cut to it. It works on captures you take with it and on any image you paste with Ctrl+V or drop onto it -- a phone screenshot, an image from a colleague, a capture from another tool. Ctrl+Z undoes a crop you regret. Try the free screenshot tool.

Crop rules

  • Leave a margin. Cropping to the exact edge of the element makes it look pasted; a little of the surrounding page gives context.
  • Keep the crop rectangular and level. Any editor can do this; do not skew or rotate.
  • Crop before annotating. Marks placed before a crop move relative to the new edges; in most tools they are simply cut off.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop a screenshot without an app?
Capture only the area you want in the first place using an area-select shortcut, or paste the screenshot into a browser-based editor with a crop tool and download the result.
Can I crop an image in Chrome?
Not with Chrome alone, but a screenshot extension with an editor can crop any image you paste or drop into it.
Should I crop before or after annotating?
Before. Annotations are positioned relative to the image, so cropping afterwards can cut them off or leave them pointing at the wrong place.
