How to Create a Product Walkthrough

August 22, 2026

A product walkthrough takes someone along one route through your product, in order, with an explanation at each stage.

It is the same artefact people mean by a click-through demo; "walkthrough" tends to emphasise the teaching and "demo" the selling, and the building is identical.

Choose the route first

One route, one destination. Write a single sentence describing what someone understands or can do at the end, and if that sentence needs an "and", you have two walkthroughs.

Take the route from evidence rather than instinct: what you demonstrate on every call, what support explains repeatedly, or where trial users stall.

Prepare before recording

  • A demo account with invented data, not a real customer's. Everything on screen ends up in a public URL.
  • Seed it plausibly -- uneven numbers, spread dates, one unhappy case. Perfect data reads as a mock-up.
  • Close what you do not need: extra tabs, notifications, browser extensions.
  • Narrow the window slightly, which makes text legible when the demo is scaled down.

Record and edit

Click through the route at a natural pace; each click becomes a step. Then remove any step that does not advance the point — most first attempts have two or three.

Write one caption per step saying what it means. Zoom into anything a viewer would have to squint at, which is more of it than you expect.

Walkthrough versus in-app tour

If you need to guide a logged-in user through their own account, reacting to what they have already done, that is an in-app tour and it requires code shipped inside your product.

A recorded walkthrough runs outside the product, needs nothing installed, and works for people who have no account — which is most of the people you are trying to reach.

Frequently asked questions

How do you create a product walkthrough?
Choose one route with one destination, prepare a demo account with plausible invented data, record by clicking through at a natural pace, remove steps that do not advance the point, caption each step with what it means, and zoom into anything small.
What is the difference between a walkthrough and a product tour?
A recorded walkthrough runs outside your product and needs nothing installed, so it works for people with no account. An in-app tour guides a logged-in user through their own data and requires code shipped inside the product.
How do I choose what the walkthrough should cover?
From evidence rather than instinct: what you demonstrate on every sales call, what support explains repeatedly, or the step where trial users stall. If your one-sentence description needs an "and", it is two walkthroughs.
