Making Your Screenshots Clickable

August 28, 2026

Almost every team has a folder of screenshots taken for a deck, a listing or a help article. They are used once and then sit there.

The gap between a screenshot and something useful is smaller than it looks: an order, a place to click, and a reason to continue.

What a static screenshot cannot do

  • Show what happens next, which is where the value of software lives.
  • Point at anything, unless you add an arrow, which ages badly.
  • Hold attention past about two seconds.
  • Tell you if anyone looked, or which one they stopped on.

Turning a set into a sequence

Put them in the order a real user would meet them and delete the ones that exist because somebody captured them rather than because they make a point. Most sets lose a third at this step.

Then mark the element the viewer should notice on each one, and write a line saying what to click and what it gets them.

Where consistency breaks

Screenshots taken months apart span product versions, and the seams show — a changed sidebar, a different button style, a renamed menu.

If the set is mismatched, re-recording the flow is usually faster than retouching, and it produces something that survives its own next update.

Where a static image is still right

A single reference image in documentation, a hero shot on a landing page, an app store listing that only accepts images. Those are not sequences and a clickable version adds nothing.

The test is whether there is a next step. No next step, no reason to make it clickable.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make screenshots clickable?
Put them in the order a user would meet them, delete the ones that make no point, mark the element to notice on each, and write one line per step saying what to click and why. The result is a sequence rather than a set of images.
Should I re-record instead of reusing old screenshots?
If they were captured months apart, usually yes. Mismatched sets show their seams -- a changed sidebar or renamed menu -- and re-recording the flow is generally faster than retouching, with the advantage of surviving the next update.
When is a plain screenshot still the right choice?
When there is no next step: a single reference image in documentation, a hero shot, or a store listing that only accepts images. Clickability adds nothing without a sequence.
