Documentation screenshots are the part of docs that rots fastest and gets checked least. Text can stay roughly true through a redesign; a screenshot cannot.
They are also the part readers rely on most, because a picture of the actual screen is what tells them they are in the right place.
One recording replaces the whole sequence of screenshots in an article, and re-recording it is one action rather than eleven retakes.
It also removes the gap between steps, which is where readers get lost — the screenshot shows the destination but not the click that got there.
Worth it for multi-step procedures, anything involving a settings screen people rarely visit, and the article your support team links most often.
Not worth it for a single-screenshot reference, an API doc, or anything a reader will copy and paste rather than click through. A demo is a sequence; if there is no sequence, use the picture.
Do not delete the written steps. Search engines index text, screen readers read text, and people who already know the answer scan text far faster than they watch anything.
The walkthrough sits alongside as the version for people who are stuck, which is a different reader from the one skimming for a setting name.
