What Is a Product Demo? Meaning, Types, and Examples

September 14, 2026

A product demo is a showing of a product doing the job someone would buy it for. Not a description of it, not a list of features: the product, running, on a task the viewer recognises as their own. The word covers a live walkthrough on a call, a recorded video, a clickable interactive demo and, loosely, a guided trial.

The four kinds are not interchangeable. Each fits a different moment in how someone decides, and picking the wrong one is the commonest reason a demo is made and never watched.

The four kinds of product demo

  • Live demo. A person drives the product on a call while the buyer watches and asks questions. Highest effort, most persuasive for a complex sale, impossible to scale.
  • Demo video. A recording of the product with narration, watched start to finish. Good for a launch or a homepage hero; cannot be clicked, so the viewer cannot check the one thing they care about.
  • Interactive demo. A captured copy of the product the viewer clicks through themselves, step by step, with the point to click highlighted. Runs anywhere a link does, needs no login and no one on a call.
  • Guided trial. The real product with sample data and a checklist. The most honest demo and the most work for the viewer, so it belongs after interest exists, not before.

What a product demo is for

A demo answers one question: "does this do what I need, the way I would do it?" Everything else on a website asserts; the demo shows. That is why a page with a demo converts differently from a page with a feature list -- the visitor stops taking your word for it.

It is also why the best demos are narrow. A tour of every screen answers no one’s question. A ninety-second demo of the one workflow a particular visitor came for answers theirs.

Product demo examples

A payments product showing a refund issued and the customer’s email arriving. A scheduling tool showing a meeting booked from a shared link with the calendar updating. A reporting product showing a dashboard filtered to one region and exported. In each case the demo is a small complete task with a visible result, not a feature catalogue.

The pillar on product demos has a live one embedded that you can click through, and product demonstration examples walks through eight formats with the situation each fits.

How to make one

For a live demo: decide the one outcome, prepare realistic data, open with the end state, close on a dated next step. For a video: write a brief, record in one take per scene, cut hard. For an interactive demo: install a recorder extension, click through the workflow, blur anything private, add captions, publish the link. The last of these takes about ten minutes and is the one most teams should make first, because it can be sent, embedded and measured.

Frequently asked questions

What does product demo mean?
A product demo (short for demonstration) is a showing of a product performing the task it exists for, so a prospective user can judge it by watching or using it rather than by reading about it. It can be live on a call, a recorded video, a clickable interactive walkthrough or a guided trial.
What are product demos used for?
Convincing someone the product does what they need: on a website before signup, in sales after a first call, in onboarding to teach a feature, in support to answer a how-do-I question, and in launches to show what shipped.
What is the difference between a product demo and a product demonstration?
None in meaning; "demo" is the short form. In practice "product demonstration" is used more for in-person and trade-show showings and "product demo" for software, but they describe the same thing.
What is the difference between a product demo and a free trial?
A demo shows the product doing a task, chosen by the vendor, in minutes. A trial hands you the product to try on your own data, which takes hours or days. The demo tells you whether to bother with the trial.
