What Is a Guided Demo?

August 22, 2026

A guided demo is an interactive walkthrough where the viewer has to click the highlighted control to advance, rather than pressing a Next button.

The distinction sounds small and changes how the demo is received, because the viewer has to read the screen to find the control.

The three things called "guided"

  • A guided interactive demo -- recorded, self-serve, and the viewer clicks the real control to move on. This is what the term usually means online.
  • A guided live demo -- a person walking someone through the product on a call. Older meaning, still common in sales.
  • An in-app guided tour -- an overlay inside your real product for logged-in users, which requires code shipped into it.
  • All three guide someone through software; only the first is a link you can send.

What guided mode changes

Attention. Finding the control means reading the screen, so the viewer actually sees what you meant them to see rather than clicking Next while thinking about something else.

It costs speed, and it costs you some viewers. An evaluator comparing three vendors does not want to hunt for a button, and on a phone the target may be small and the viewer one-handed.

Who it suits

Onboarding, training, partner enablement and internal documentation — anywhere the viewer has already decided to use the product and the goal is building a habit rather than making a case.

For landing pages, cold outreach and social, free advancement converts better, because those viewers have not decided you are worth effort yet.

How to tell if it is working

The drop-off chart answers it directly. If a guided demo loses a large share at the first step requiring a click, the guidance is the problem rather than the content.

Both modes are a setting rather than a plan, so this is something to test rather than agonise over.

Frequently asked questions

What is a guided demo?
An interactive walkthrough where the viewer clicks the highlighted control to advance rather than pressing Next. Finding the control means reading the screen, so it holds attention better than free advancement.
Is a guided demo the same as a guided tour?
Not quite. A guided demo is recorded and sent as a link. An in-app guided tour runs inside your live product for logged-in users and needs code shipped into it, and a guided live demo is a person on a call.
When should I not use guided mode?
On landing pages, cold outreach and social, where viewers have not yet decided you are worth effort and will not hunt for a button. It suits onboarding, training and enablement, where the goal is building a habit.
