Marketing When You Cannot Afford a Marketing Team

August 28, 2026

Marketing advice is largely written by and for people with a team, a budget and a designer. Applied by one person with none of those it produces a long list of things not being done.

The useful question is narrower: what does one person actually do on a Tuesday?

Safe to ignore for now

  • Brand work. Real, and it compounds over years you do not have yet.
  • Paid acquisition, until you know what converts organically.
  • Most tooling. Analytics stacks answer questions you cannot act on at your volume.
  • Posting on every platform. One place you actually enjoy beats five you resent.

What works at zero budget

Things that are free and slow: writing something specific and true, answering questions in places your customers already are, and talking to individual people.

None of it scales, which is exactly why it is available to you and not to a company that measures in campaigns.

Make one asset that works everywhere

The constraint is your time, so favour things you make once and use repeatedly. A demo is the clearest example: the same recording works on the homepage, in outreach, in a community reply, in your email signature and in every "what does it do?" you answer.

A blog post works in one place. A demo works in twelve, which matters enormously when there is one of you.

Pick one channel and stay

The most common failure with no budget is spreading thinly: a bit of everything, nothing long enough to work.

Choose the channel where your customers already gather and where you can stand to show up weekly for six months. Consistency in one place beats presence in five, and it is the only strategy that fits a single person's calendar.

Frequently asked questions

How do I market a product with no budget?
Favour things that are free and slow -- writing something specific and true, answering questions where your customers already are, talking to individual people -- and make assets you use repeatedly rather than once. None of it scales, which is why it is available to you.
What marketing can I safely ignore early on?
Brand work, which compounds over years you do not have yet; paid acquisition, until you know what converts organically; most analytics tooling, which answers questions you cannot act on at low volume; and posting everywhere rather than in one place.
Which channel should I choose?
The one where your customers already gather and where you can stand to show up weekly for six months. Consistency in one place beats presence in five, and it is the only approach that fits one person's calendar.
