How to Screenshot an Error Message So Someone Can Actually Fix It

September 21, 2026

When something breaks, the screenshot of the error is often the only evidence anyone will get. A blurry photo of a monitor, a capture with the message half off-screen, or a paraphrase in the ticket body all lead to the same reply: "can you send the exact error?"

What the screenshot has to include

  • The full message text, including any code or ID at the end -- that is usually what the engineer searches for.
  • The page or screen it appeared on, enough to identify it.
  • What you were doing -- a button half-pressed, a form filled in. If the state matters, capture it.
  • The time, if it is not in the message; write it in the ticket.

Catching errors that vanish

Toast notifications and inline messages often disappear after a few seconds or on the next click. Have the capture shortcut ready before you reproduce the error, and trigger it from the keyboard the moment the message appears. If it is gone before you can capture, reproduce it once more with the shortcut under your fingers.

For errors in the browser console, F12 opens DevTools; the Console tab holds the text and you can capture or copy it from there.

Send it without your data

Capture the area around the error rather than the whole screen, then pixelate anything identifying -- a name, an email, an account ID -- before attaching. Demorta’s screenshot tool does the area capture, the blur and a box around the message in one place, and downloads a PNG without uploading anything. Try the free screenshot tool.

Also paste the text

A screenshot cannot be searched. Paste the error text into the ticket as well, so the person fixing it can look it up and so it is findable later. The screenshot proves it; the text makes it useful.

Frequently asked questions

What should a screenshot of an error include?
The full message including any code, enough of the page to locate it, and the state you were in. Paste the message text into the ticket too, since images cannot be searched.
How do I screenshot an error that disappears quickly?
Have a keyboard-triggered capture ready before reproducing it, and fire it the moment the message appears. Console errors can be captured from DevTools at leisure.
How do I send an error screenshot without exposing my account?
Capture only the area around the error, pixelate any names, emails or IDs, and use a tool that does not upload the image.
