How to Demo Your Shopify Integration

August 22, 2026

Shopify merchants install and uninstall apps quickly, often on a busy day, and judge them within minutes.

Everything about the demo should be shorter and more concrete than for a considered B2B purchase.

Show install to value in under a minute

Install, one configuration step, and something visibly working. If your app needs more setup than that, show it honestly and say how long it takes rather than letting a merchant discover it.

Install friction is the single biggest cause of an uninstall, and a demo that is honest about it attracts merchants who will stay.

Both sides of the store

  • The storefront, because a merchant is protecting how their shop looks and loads.
  • The admin, where they will actually work.
  • A theme that is not the default, since almost nobody uses the default and "will it fit my theme" is the real question.
  • On a phone, which is where most of their customers are.

Use a development store

Shopify development stores exist for this. Never record against a live shop — order data contains real customer names and addresses, and a published demo is public.

Populate it plausibly: real-looking products, a mix of order states, one refund. An empty store reads as an app nobody uses.

Where merchants will see it

Your app listing, your own site, and support replies. Listings usually allow a link and screenshots rather than an embed, so plan for a linked demo and treat any embed as a bonus.

Your demo's best steps also make good listing screenshots, which saves producing two sets of assets.

Frequently asked questions

What should a Shopify app demo show?
Install to visible value in under a minute, both the storefront and the admin, a non-default theme since almost nobody uses the default, and the mobile view where most of their customers are.
Can I record a Shopify demo from a real store?
No. Order data contains real customer names and addresses and a published demo is a public URL. Use a development store populated with real-looking products, mixed order states and one refund.
Where do Shopify merchants see demos?
Your app listing, your own site and support replies. Listings usually allow a link and screenshots rather than an embed, so plan for a linked demo -- and your demo's best steps double as listing screenshots.
