How to Add an Interactive Demo to a Shopify Store or App Listing

August 18, 2026

There are two Shopify questions hiding in this search, and they have different answers: putting a demo on a store you own, and demoing a Shopify app to merchants who might install it.

The second is where most of the value is, because app store conversion is brutally competitive.

Embedding on your own store

  • Online Store → Themes → Customize, then add a Custom Liquid section where the demo should go.
  • Paste the iframe into that section.
  • Or edit a page in Pages, switch the rich text editor to HTML view (`<>`), and paste there.
  • Avoid theme.liquid unless the demo must appear on every page, which it should not.

Demoing a Shopify app to merchants

Merchants evaluating an app want two things a screenshot cannot give: what the admin experience looks like after install, and what the shopper sees on the storefront. Listing screenshots show frozen moments of both and convince nobody.

A short clickable demo covering install → configure → visible result answers the real question, which is "how much work is this and what changes". Link it from your listing and from your own site.

What the app listing itself allows

Shopify's listing pages take screenshots and video rather than arbitrary embedded iframes, so the demo lives on your own site and the listing links to it.

That makes the first frame of the demo important -- it becomes the thing people see in your screenshots -- and makes a short video export of the same demo genuinely useful, since video is a format the listing does accept.

Storefront demos have a specific trap

  • Theme mismatch. A demo recorded on Dawn looks foreign to a merchant on a heavily customised theme. Say which theme it was recorded on.
  • Currency and locale. Prices in the wrong currency read as "not built for me".
  • Checkout is off-limits to show casually. Do not record real checkout sessions; use a test order.
  • Mobile first, genuinely. Most Shopify storefront traffic is mobile, so a desktop-only demo is showing the minority case.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add an interactive demo to a Shopify store?
Add a Custom Liquid section in the theme customiser where the demo should appear and paste the iframe, or edit a page and paste it in the HTML view of the rich text editor. Avoid putting it in theme.liquid unless it genuinely belongs on every page.
Can I embed an interactive demo in a Shopify app listing?
Not directly -- listings accept screenshots and video rather than arbitrary iframes. Host the demo on your own site and link it from the listing, and export a short video from the same recording for the listing media, since video is accepted there.
What should a Shopify app demo show?
Install, configure, and the visible result on the storefront -- the two questions merchants actually have are how much work this is and what changes for shoppers. Note which theme it was recorded on, and show mobile, since most storefront traffic is mobile.
