A click-through demo is a guided sequence a viewer advances themselves. No call to book, no video to sit through, no sales engineer required.
The format is easy. Choosing what to put in it is not, and that decision is made before you press record.
The most common failure is scope. A demo that tries to cover the product covers nothing, because the viewer never reaches a moment where something is clearly better than it was.
Pick the shortest path from "nothing" to a result your product is proud of. For an invoicing tool that is an invoice sent, not a settings tour.
Record more than you need and delete afterwards. Deleting a step takes a second; realising a step is missing means recording again.
When cutting, remove any step where the viewer learns nothing new — navigation clicks, confirmation screens, anything that exists because the software required it rather than because it makes a point.
A caption reading "Dashboard" wastes the only line of text on the step. The viewer can see it is a dashboard.
Say what to do and why it matters: "Click Reports to see where the month went." Two things happen at once — the viewer knows where to click, and they know what they are about to get.
The final step is the most valuable real estate in the demo, because everyone who reaches it has just watched your product work.
Ask for exactly one thing: start a trial, book a call, or see pricing. A demo that ends on a screenshot has spent all its persuasion and collected nothing.
Click through it — the same kind of demo you can record of your own product.
