Sending a Demo in a LinkedIn Message

August 28, 2026

A cold LinkedIn message competes with a dozen others that all ask for fifteen minutes. The ones that get replies are the ones that arrive having already done something.

For a demo tool that is unusually easy, because you can record a walkthrough of the recipient's own product before you write to them.

Lead with the thing, not the ask

A message containing a finished artefact about their product reads completely differently from one describing what you could do. It also proves the tool works, without a single sentence about the tool.

The ask, if there is one, goes at the end and stays small. "It is yours either way" is not a throwaway line — it is what makes the message not a pitch.

What to record

  • Their signup or first-run flow, which is what a visitor to their site sees.
  • Short. Five or six steps; you are demonstrating an idea, not delivering a project.
  • Nothing behind their login, which you should not be inside.
  • Nothing that reads as criticism. "Here is a walkthrough" lands; "here is what is wrong with your onboarding" does not.

Keep the message short enough to read on a phone

Two or three sentences. Something specific about their product so it is visibly not a template, the link, and one line saying what it is.

Anything longer is skimmed, and a long cold message signals that replying will also be expensive.

The limits, honestly

This does not scale far. Recording a real demo per person is ten minutes, which caps you at a handful a day, and automating it removes the entire reason it works.

It also fails badly if done carelessly. A sloppy demo of somebody's product is worse than no message, because now they have seen your work.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a cold LinkedIn message that gets a reply?
Arrive having already done something. A message containing a finished walkthrough of the recipient's own product reads completely differently from one asking for fifteen minutes, and it proves your tool works without a sentence about it.
What should I record for a prospect?
Their signup or first-run flow, in five or six steps -- what a visitor to their site already sees. Nothing behind their login, and nothing framed as criticism: "here is a walkthrough" lands where "here is what is wrong with your onboarding" does not.
Does this approach scale?
No, and that is part of why it works. Ten minutes per person caps you at a handful a day, and automating it removes the reason it gets replies. Done carelessly it is worse than nothing, since the prospect has now seen your work.
