Using a Demo Alongside Your App Store Listing

August 28, 2026

App store and marketplace listings give you a fixed format: a few screenshots, a short video if you make one, and a description most people skim.

None of it is interactive, and none of it can be updated the moment you notice it is not working.

Where the demo goes, since not in the listing

  • The support or website link the listing allows -- often the only clickable thing on the page.
  • Your landing page, which most listings link to and which usually just repeats the screenshots.
  • The onboarding email after install, where a new user decides whether to persist.
  • Your reply to reviews asking how something works.

What a store listing cannot answer

Screenshots show that screens exist. They cannot show the sequence, which is where the value of most software lives, and they cannot show how little work something takes.

A demo answers "how many steps is this?" — a question a hesitant installer is asking and no listing format allows you to answer.

For marketplace and integration listings

Integration directories are a different case, because the reader is evaluating whether your product works with something they already use.

A short demo showing the connection being made, with the other product visibly named, does more than a paragraph claiming a seamless integration.

Update it when the listing rots

Store screenshots go stale because retaking and resubmitting them is tedious enough to postpone. A linked demo can be re-recorded and updated in place without a review cycle.

That is the practical advantage: it is the one part of your listing you can fix on the day you notice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put an interactive demo in an app store listing?
Not directly -- listings allow screenshots and video only. Put it behind the website or support link the listing permits, on the landing page that listing points to, and in the onboarding email after install.
What does a demo add to a store listing?
Sequence and effort. Screenshots prove screens exist but cannot show the order things happen in or how few steps something takes, which is the question a hesitant installer is actually asking.
Why not just update the store screenshots?
You should, but retaking and resubmitting is tedious enough that it gets postponed, and some stores require review. A linked demo can be re-recorded and updated in place the day you notice it is wrong.
