Turning a Screen Recording Into an Interactive Demo

August 31, 2026

Most teams have a screen recording before they have an interactive demo, and the obvious move is to convert one into the other. It works, but not by transcribing it step for step.

A video and a demo fail in different ways, so the same content has to be rearranged rather than copied.

The same content a video would carry, rearranged for clicking.

What a video does that a demo cannot

A video controls pace, which lets you build an argument in a particular order and land a point at a particular moment. A demo hands that control to the viewer.

So anything in the recording that depends on timing — a pause for effect, a reveal — has to become structural instead: a step of its own, or a caption that carries the point.

What to cut in the conversion

  • The introduction, since nobody clicks through a spoken preamble.
  • Waiting, because loading spinners are a cost in video and simply absent in a demo.
  • Everything said while nothing happened, which is usually a third of the runtime.
  • Mistakes and corrections, which are charming in a video and confusing when clickable.

What to add that the video never needed

Captions have to instruct now, not narrate. In a video you say "and then I will add a vehicle"; in a demo it becomes "Click Add vehicle", because the viewer performs the action.

You also need an ending. Videos end by stopping, which is acceptable; demos end with someone holding attention and nowhere to put it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn a screen recording into an interactive demo?
Yes, but not by transcribing it step for step. A video controls pace and a demo hands that control to the viewer, so anything depending on timing has to become structural — a step of its own, or a caption carrying the point.
What should I cut when converting a video to a demo?
The spoken introduction, all waiting and loading, everything said while nothing happened on screen, and any mistakes or corrections. Those are charming in a recording and confusing once the viewer is clicking.
What does a demo need that a video does not?
Captions that instruct rather than narrate — "Click Add vehicle" instead of "and then I will add a vehicle" — and a real ending. Videos can end by stopping; a demo ends with an engaged viewer who needs somewhere to go.
