Using Interactive Demos to Deflect Support Tickets

August 18, 2026

Support is the one function with a precise, countable payback from demos: tickets that did not happen.

It is also the function most likely to build them for the wrong questions, because the loudest question is rarely the most common one.

Pick by volume, not by irritation

Sort your tickets by frequency and build demos for the top five, not for the ones that annoy you most. Those are different lists, and the annoying ones are usually rare and complicated.

The best candidates are questions with a visual answer and a fixed path: where a setting lives, how to connect an integration, how to export something.

What a demo answers better than text

  • "Where is that setting?" — a demo shows the path; a written answer describes it and gets misread.
  • Multi-step configuration where the user loses their place halfway.
  • Anything with a modal or a nested menu, which is disproportionately hard to describe in words.
  • Not account-specific problems. Those need a human looking at the account.

Where to put them

Three places, in order of value: embedded in the relevant help-centre article, pasted into macros and canned replies, and in the in-app help widget if you have one.

The macro is the one that changes daily life. An agent replying with a demo link resolves the ticket in one round instead of three.

Measuring it honestly

Ticket volume for that specific question, before and after, is the only number that matters. Views are not deflection -- people watch things and still write in.

Give it a month, and compare like periods. Support volume is seasonal enough that a two-week comparison will tell you whatever you want to hear.

The maintenance problem

Support demos rot faster than marketing demos, because they show settings pages that change without anyone announcing it. A demo showing a menu that moved is worse than no demo -- it actively misleads.

Assign an owner and re-check them quarterly. It is a small job that nobody does by default.

Frequently asked questions

How do interactive demos reduce support tickets?
By answering the repeat questions with a visual, fixed path -- where a setting lives, how to connect an integration, how to export data. Embedded in the relevant help article and pasted into agent macros, they resolve in one round what otherwise takes three.
Which support questions should you build demos for?
The most frequent ones, not the most irritating ones -- they are different lists. Good candidates have a visual answer and a fixed path. Account-specific problems are a poor fit, since they need a human looking at the actual account.
How do you measure demo deflection?
Ticket volume for that specific question, before and after, compared over at least a month and against a like period. Views are not deflection: people watch a demo and still write in, so view counts will overstate the effect.
