Almost all SaaS growth advice assumes you already have customers. Optimise your funnel, improve retention, build a content engine -- none of it applies when the number is zero.
The first ten are found a different way, and the methods that get you there stop working around customer fifty. That is expected, not a sign you did it wrong.
At zero customers you have no idea which messages land, which objections recur, or who actually has this problem badly enough to pay. A funnel built on those guesses optimises the wrong thing.
The first ten are a research exercise that happens to produce revenue. The goal is learning what makes someone say yes, in their words, so everything you build afterwards is built on evidence.
Not because outreach does not work, but because early messages ask for a call to explain a product the recipient cannot picture. That is a large ask for an unknown company.
The fix is to make the message self-contained: describe the problem in their language, then link something they can look at in thirty seconds without booking anything. An interactive demo does this well because it needs no scheduling and no signup.
Free pilots feel like momentum and teach you almost nothing. People accept free things they would never buy, and their feedback reflects that indifference.
A small price is the cheapest possible test of whether the problem is real. It also makes the next conversation easier, since "ten companies pay for this" is a very different sentence from "ten companies are trying it".
Keep a running list of every reason someone gives for not buying, verbatim. Within ten conversations the same three or four will dominate.
Those objections are your homepage copy, your FAQ and your demo script. They are the highest-value asset from this stage, and most founders let them evaporate.
