How to Demo a Product That Includes Hardware

August 21, 2026

Connected hardware — sensors, trackers, terminals, cameras, medical devices — has a demo problem no browser recorder solves: half the product is a physical object.

The half that is software is usually the half being evaluated, which helps more than it sounds.

Demo the software, photograph the hardware

The dashboard, the alerts, the reports — all capturable normally, and all where the daily experience lives. The device itself belongs in one image step: a clear photograph, in context, with something for scale.

Uploading an image as a step is the right tool for that, rather than trying to record a physical object through a browser.

Show installation honestly

The first question about any hardware product is how much work installation is. Buyers assume the worst, and the assumption is usually wrong.

Two or three photograph steps of the physical setup, plus the software pairing flow, converts an unknown into a known. If installation genuinely needs an engineer, say so — that is a qualification, not a weakness.

Make the data arrive

  • The device reporting for the first time is the moment the product becomes real.
  • A live reading changing, if you can capture it across two steps.
  • An alert firing from a real threshold, which is why most of these products get bought.
  • The offline state, because devices lose connection and buyers know it.

Answer the logistics in captions

Cost per device, lead time, warranty, what happens when one breaks, whether it works with existing hardware. These decide hardware deals and none of them are visible on any screen.

A caption on the relevant step is a good place for the one or two that come up in every conversation.

Two audiences again

Whoever installs it and whoever reads the data are rarely the same person, and the installer is usually the reason a rollout stalls.

A short demo aimed at the installer — pair, place, confirm — is often the more valuable of the two, and almost nobody makes it.

Frequently asked questions

How do you demo a product that includes physical hardware?
Record the software normally and put the device in image steps -- a clear photograph in context with something for scale. The software half is where the daily experience lives and usually what is being evaluated.
What do hardware buyers most want to see?
Installation, because they assume it is harder than it is. Two or three photographs of the physical setup plus the pairing flow turns an unknown into a known, and the first data arriving is the moment the product becomes real.
Should I make a separate demo for installers?
Usually yes, and almost nobody does. Whoever installs the device and whoever reads its data are rarely the same person, and the installer is the one who stalls a rollout.
