Every demo tool on the market will tell you that you need an interactive demo. Most of them are talking to an audience that mostly does not.
An interactive demo solves one specific problem: your product is hard to understand from the outside, and people will not commit to a trial or a call until they can see it working. If that is not your problem, a demo is decoration.
You probably need one if
- Your product looks like every competitor from the outside. Dashboards, CRMs, project tools -- the screenshot tells nobody anything, because everyone has the same screenshot.
- Sign-up costs the visitor something. A trial that requires connecting data, importing records, or inviting a team is a real commitment, and people want to see what they are committing to.
- Your sales calls open with the same fifteen-minute walkthrough every single time. That walkthrough is a demo you are re-recording live, badly, at your own hourly cost.
- The valuable part is several clicks deep. If the thing that sells your product is on screen four, a screenshot of screen one cannot sell it.
You probably do not if
- The product explains itself in one screenshot. A link shortener, a font, a single-purpose utility. Just show the screenshot.
- Anyone can sign up in ten seconds and see it themselves. If the real product is quicker than a demo, send them to the real product.
- You are pre-launch with no product to record. A demo of a prototype is a mockup, and calling it a demo damages trust when the real thing differs.
- Your problem is traffic, not conversion. If forty people a month reach your site, a demo will not fix that. Go get more of the right visitors first.
The test that settles it
Look at your last ten lost deals or abandoned signups. Ask, for each, whether the person understood what the product did when they left.
If most did understand and left anyway, your problem is price, fit, or timing, and a demo changes nothing. If a meaningful share left confused, that is exactly what a demo fixes -- and you now know which part to record, because you know what they did not understand.
The cheapest version of the experiment
You do not have to commit to a subscription to answer this. Record one demo of your single most-misunderstood flow, put it on the page where people currently drop off, and leave it a month.
Most tools, this one included, have a free tier that comfortably covers one demo. If it does nothing, you have lost an afternoon rather than a year of budget -- and that is a better outcome than an untested assumption in either direction.
What a demo will not do
It will not make a confusing product clear. A demo of a confusing product is a confusing demo, and building one is a very effective way of discovering that the confusion was in the product all along.
It will not replace a salesperson on a complex, high-value deal. It will remove the repetitive first fifteen minutes from that salesperson's day, which is a different and more realistic claim.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need an interactive demo for my SaaS?
- Only if people cannot understand your product from the outside. If your product looks like its competitors in a screenshot, if the valuable part is several clicks deep, or if signing up requires real commitment like importing data, a demo helps. If a single screenshot explains it, or anyone can sign up in seconds, it does not.
- Is an interactive demo better than a free trial?
- They do different jobs. A demo answers "what is this" in under a minute with no commitment; a trial answers "does this work for my data" and costs the visitor real effort. Most products want the demo before the trial, not instead of it.
- How do I know if a demo would actually help me?
- Review your last ten lost deals or abandoned signups and ask whether each person understood the product when they left. If most understood and still left, the problem is price or fit and a demo will not help. If a real share left confused, a demo addresses exactly that.
