Do I Actually Need a Product Demo?

August 28, 2026

Most pages answering this are published by companies selling demo software, so the answer is always yes. That is not useful.

Here are the conditions where it genuinely helps, the conditions where it does not, and a way to tell which you are in without spending anything.

This is the format the page is describing. Click through it and decide.

Three signs you need one

  • Your first sales calls repeat. If most of them cover the same five screens, that is a recording pretending to be a meeting.
  • People leave your site without seeing the product. If the only way to see it is to sign up, most visitors never will.
  • You are forwarded to people you never meet -- a security reviewer, a finance approver, a sceptical colleague. They get a link and nothing else.

Three signs you do not

  • Your product only makes sense against a customer's own data. A generic demo can mislead more than it explains.
  • You have a handful of buyers and you know them all. The constraint is trust, and a demo does not build that.
  • You get very little traffic. Fix that first; a demo multiplies traffic rather than creating it.

The test that settles it

Count the first calls you took last month that covered substantially the same ground. Then count how many people visited your site and did not sign up.

If the first number is large, a demo saves you time. If the second is large and you have no way for those people to see the product, a demo makes you money. If neither is true, you have your answer and it cost you ten minutes.

What "a demo" actually means here

Not a scheduled call and not a video. A recorded click-through: your real screens, in order, that somebody advances themselves at their own pace, with no signup and nothing to install.

The embed below is one. It is the fastest way to answer this question for yourself, since the format is difficult to picture and obvious once seen.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a product demo?
Probably, if your first sales calls repeat the same screens, visitors leave without seeing the product, or you get forwarded to evaluators you never meet. Probably not, if your product only makes sense against a customer's own data, you have a handful of buyers you already know, or you get very little traffic.
How do I know if a demo would help my business?
Count last month's first calls that covered the same ground, and how many site visitors left without signing up. A large first number means a demo saves time; a large second number with no way to see the product means it makes money. If neither, you have your answer.
Is an interactive demo the same as a demo call?
No. It is a recorded click-through of your real screens that somebody advances themselves, at their own pace, with no signup and nothing installed. It replaces the repeatable part of a call rather than the conversation.
