Expansion revenue is the cheapest revenue you have, and most products pursue it with a locked padlock icon and a pricing link.
That tells a customer they cannot do something. It does not tell them what they would get, which is the only thing that would make them consider paying.
Wherever a feature is gated, a short demo of that feature working is a better answer than a padlock. The customer gets to evaluate the upgrade rather than just be blocked by it.
Label the plan on the step. A demo of a premium feature that does not say it is premium becomes a discovery of a limit later, which is the version that generates refund requests.
A customer on your entry plan does not want "advanced reporting". They want the specific report they currently rebuild by hand every Monday.
That means demos aimed at how the customer actually works, which is knowable — you have their usage data, which is the advantage this placement has over any acquisition demo.
One upgrade demo, in the place the constraint is felt, is helpful. The same demo on every screen is nagging, and it makes the product feel like a trailer for a better product.
Customers who are happy on their current plan are not a failure. Some of them will grow into the next one and the ones who do not are still paying.
