Userpilot Alternatives: Onboarding Inside the Product, and Before It

September 4, 2026

Userpilot builds onboarding flows, tooltips and in-app messages for product-led teams, without engineering having to ship each one.

Teams look for alternatives for two different reasons, and they need different answers: either the in-app tooling is not the problem, or the problem is happening before anyone reaches the product at all.

The part that happens before anybody has an account.

What in-app onboarding does well

Getting a new signup to a first success inside the real product, with checklists, prompts and nudges tied to what that user has actually done.

That contextual awareness is the thing a demo genuinely cannot match, because a demo does not know anything about the person clicking it.

What it cannot touch

  • The signup that never happened, which is where most of the funnel is lost.
  • Sales conversations, since nothing can be overlaid on a prospect who has no account.
  • A colleague being shown the product by the person evaluating it.
  • Anywhere off your domain — an email, an ad, a review site, a shared link.

Which to use, by job

Activation and feature adoption for people already signed up: in-app onboarding, and a demo is not a replacement for it.

Persuading someone to sign up, or showing a feature to someone who has not enabled it: an interactive demo, which works everywhere the product does not.

Where Demorta fits

Before the account exists, and outside it afterwards. A demo on the pricing page, in a sales email, or in a help article — five free, paid from $15.99/month, with analytics on each step.

Plenty of teams run both, and they are not competing for the same budget line as often as the category pages suggest.

Frequently asked questions

Is an interactive demo a replacement for in-app onboarding?
No. In-app onboarding reacts to what a specific user has done inside the product, which a demo cannot do. The demo covers everywhere the product cannot reach — before signup, in email, on a website, in a conversation with someone who has no account.
When should I use a demo instead of a product tour?
When the viewer is not inside your product. If they have not signed up, are evaluating on your website, or are being forwarded something by a colleague, an in-app tour has nothing to attach to and a demo is the only format that works.
Can I use both?
Most product-led teams do, and it is usually the right answer: a demo does the persuading before signup, in-app onboarding does the activating afterwards. They fail in different places, which is why one does not substitute for the other.
