Screenshots in a Deck vs an Interactive Demo

August 28, 2026

The most common way to show software is still a screenshot in a slide, narrated by a person on a call.

That works while the person is there. Almost all of a deck's life is spent being forwarded to people who were not on the call.

What breaks when the presenter leaves

  • The narration was the content, and it does not travel with the file.
  • Screenshots go stale and nobody notices, because slides are rarely reopened by their author.
  • Nobody knows how long it takes, so the deck does not get opened at all.
  • You learn nothing. A sent file reports no drop-off, no completion, no evidence anyone looked.

What a demo changes

It carries its own explanation, so the version forwarded to a finance approver at 11pm makes the same sense as the one you presented.

It also reports back. Which steps were watched and where somebody stopped is information a slide deck structurally cannot produce, and it is often more useful than the meeting was.

When the deck is still right

A deck is a better container for a narrative that is mostly not the product — market, pricing, roadmap, team, commercial terms.

The strongest version is usually both: keep the deck for the argument, and replace the four product screenshots in the middle with one link to a demo.

The cheap first step

Take the slide with the most screenshots on it, record that flow as a demo, and replace the slide with a link.

That is one slide, about fifteen minutes, and it converts the weakest part of the deck into the only part that reports back.

Frequently asked questions

Is a slide deck good enough for a product demo?
Only while somebody is narrating it. Most of a deck's life is spent forwarded to people who were not on the call, and the narration -- which was the actual content -- does not travel with the file.
Should I replace my deck with an interactive demo?
Usually not entirely. A deck is the better container for market, pricing, roadmap and commercial terms. Replace the product screenshots in the middle with one demo link and keep the rest.
What does a demo tell me that a deck cannot?
Whether anyone looked, which parts they watched, and where they stopped. A sent file reports nothing at all, so a deck cannot tell you it was never opened -- which is the most common outcome.
