Putting a Product Demo in an Investor Update

August 18, 2026

Monthly investor updates are skimmed. Metrics, ask, done. Anything requiring real attention has to earn it in the first few lines.

A short demo of what shipped is one of the few things that reliably does, because it is the only part of the update that is not a number they have seen before.

What investors are actually checking

Not the feature. Whether the product is getting better at a pace consistent with what you said last month, and whether you have taste.

A demo answers both incidentally. Shipped velocity is visible across updates, and the quality of what you show says more about judgement than any paragraph about strategy.

Keep it short and specific

  • One feature, thirty to sixty seconds. Not a product tour.
  • Show the customer-visible change, not the architecture behind it.
  • Say what it unblocks. "This is what three enterprise deals were waiting on" is the sentence that matters.
  • Link it, do not embed it. Update emails with heavy embeds get clipped by mail clients.

In a fundraise, not just an update

A demo link in the data room or in the follow-up after a partner meeting lets the person championing you show the product to the rest of the partnership without you in the room. That is exactly the moment your deck is being retold by someone else.

The same logic as a B2B champion: give them something forwardable that shows the product, not a recording of your pitch.

What not to do

Do not demo something that does not exist yet. Investors talk to each other and to your customers, and a demo of a mockup presented as shipped is the kind of thing that surfaces at exactly the wrong moment.

If it is a prototype, say so in the same sentence as the link.

Frequently asked questions

Should you include a product demo in an investor update?
Yes, as a short link rather than an embed -- thirty to sixty seconds on one shipped, customer-visible feature. It is often the only part of an update that gets more than a skim, and it shows shipping velocity across months without you claiming anything.
What do investors look for in a product demo?
Whether the product is improving at the pace you described, and whether your judgement about what to build is good. Both show incidentally in a short demo of what actually shipped, which is why specificity beats a broad tour.
Can you demo unreleased features to investors?
Only if you label it clearly as a prototype in the same sentence. Investors talk to each other and to your customers, so a mockup presented as shipped tends to surface later at the worst possible moment.
