Interactive Demos for User Activation

August 22, 2026

Activation is the moment a new user does the thing your product exists for. Everything before it is setup, and setup is where accounts go quiet.

Demos help here for a specific reason: the gap is usually not motivation, it is not knowing what the destination looks like.

Define activation as one action

Not "used the product three times" — a single concrete action a user takes that reliably predicts them staying. Sent their first invoice. Connected their first integration. Published their first page.

If you cannot name it, the demo work is premature. Find the action first; everything below depends on knowing which one it is.

Why a demo beats a checklist

  • A checklist assumes you know what each item means. A new user often does not, which is why items get skipped rather than done.
  • A demo shows the finished state, which is motivating in a way an unticked box is not.
  • It can be re-watched at the moment of confusion, where a tour that fired once is gone.
  • It does not require code in your product, so it ships this week rather than next quarter.

Keep it to the activation path

Everything not on the path to that one action is a distraction at this moment. Settings, integrations, the reporting suite — all real value, none of it what an unactivated user needs.

Four to six steps. If it needs more, the activation path itself may be too long, which is a product finding worth having.

Where a real tour is the better tool

If you need to guide someone through their own data, inside the product, reacting to what they have already done, that is an in-app tour and it needs an SDK. Demorta does not do that and it is the honest answer.

A demo is the right tool when the barrier is "what does good look like" rather than "where is the button in my account".

Frequently asked questions

How do demos help user activation?
By showing what the destination looks like. The barrier for a new user is usually not motivation but not knowing what a good outcome looks like, which a checklist cannot convey and a demo of the finished state can.
How long should an activation demo be?
Four to six steps, covering only the path to your single activation action. If it needs more than that, the activation path itself may be too long -- which is a useful product finding rather than a demo problem.
Should I use a demo or an in-app product tour for activation?
A demo when the barrier is "what does good look like". An in-app tour when you need to guide someone through their own data reacting to what they have done -- that requires an SDK in your product, which Demorta does not provide.
