Demoing to the Person Who Has to Run It

August 25, 2026

Somewhere between the team wanting your product and the invoice being paid, someone in IT looks at it. They did not ask for it, they will support it, and they are accountable if it goes wrong.

The demo that excited the team is not addressed to them at all.

What they need to see

  • Access control. Roles, permissions, and what an ordinary user cannot do.
  • Provisioning and removal. Adding someone, and — more importantly — removing a leaver.
  • Audit trail. Who did what, and whether it can be exported.
  • Where the data lives, and what integrations reach out to.
  • SSO, if you have it. If not, say so early rather than at the end of an evaluation.

Answer the offboarding question first

The scenario IT genuinely worries about is someone leaving with access. Showing an account being deactivated, and what happens to their data, addresses a real operational risk in about thirty seconds.

Almost nobody demos it, which is why doing so lands so well with an audience that is used to being sold to rather than answered.

Being honest about what you lack

Small products often have no SSO, no SOC 2 and a thin audit trail. Saying that plainly, early, costs you the deals that were never going to close and keeps the ones where it does not matter.

Discovering it in week six of an evaluation costs everyone the six weeks, and IT remembers which vendors wasted their time.

Keep it short and self-serve

Two or three minutes, sent as a link, no call required. This audience prefers reading to meetings and is assessing several tools at once.

Pair it with the documents — security overview, subprocessors, DPA — in the same message. The demo shows the controls exist; the documents let the review proceed.

Frequently asked questions

What does IT want to see in a product demo?
Access control and what an ordinary user cannot do, provisioning and especially removal of a leaver, an exportable audit trail, where data lives, and whether SSO exists. Not the product features the team was excited about.
What is the single most effective thing to show IT?
An account being deactivated and what happens to that person's data. Someone leaving with access is the scenario they actually worry about, it takes thirty seconds, and almost nobody demos it.
What if you have no SSO or SOC 2?
Say so early and plainly. It costs the deals that were never going to close and keeps the ones where it does not matter -- whereas discovering it in week six costs everyone the six weeks, and IT remembers which vendors wasted their time.
