Demo Teardown: What to Fix First

After you have built a demo you can no longer watch it. You know where every click goes, so you cannot experience the confusion a first-time viewer has.
This is a fixed order to review it in, arranged so the expensive problems surface before the cosmetic ones.
Review in this order
- Does step one show the product working? If not, nothing else matters yet.
- Is there one job, or several? Several is the most common and most costly fault.
- Can a stranger tell what to click? Ambiguity reads as a broken demo, not a subtle one.
- Does anything private appear? One real customer name undoes a lot of trust.
- Does it end by asking for something? A dead end wastes the viewers who liked it.
Then fix in the opposite order to your instinct
The temptation is to start with polish — captions reworded, zoom tightened, a colour changed. Those are the cheapest changes and the least valuable ones.
Structure first, clarity second, appearance last. A demo with the right structure and plain styling outperforms a beautiful tour of a menu every time.
Watch someone else use it, once
One person, no instructions, no commentary from you. Watch where they hesitate, not what they say afterwards — people are polite about demos and honest with their hands.
A single hesitation you did not expect is worth more than a week of your own reviewing.
