Demos in Your Onboarding Emails

August 28, 2026

The gap between signing up and getting value is where most new users are lost, and onboarding emails are the main tool for closing it.

Those emails almost always describe what to do next. Showing it is a different proposition entirely.

One demo per email, one action per demo

An onboarding sequence that links to a full product tour is asking a new user to watch a documentary before doing anything.

Send one short walkthrough per email, each covering the single action that email is asking for. Three steps is plenty when the reader is going to do the thing immediately afterwards.

The sequence that tends to work

  • Day 0 -- the first useful action, not a tour. The shortest path to something that feels like progress.
  • Day 2 -- the step most people get stuck on. You know which one from your support queue.
  • Day 5 -- the feature that makes people stay, shown rather than named.
  • Day 10 -- what they have not tried yet, chosen from what they actually did.

It tells you where onboarding breaks

Per-step drop-off in an onboarding demo is a direct read on which part of your product is confusing, from people currently confused by it.

That is better evidence than a survey, because it is behaviour rather than opinion, and it arrives while the user is still around to be helped.

Keep it out of the way of the product

The goal is the user doing the thing in your product, not watching a demo of it. Keep the walkthroughs short and end each one pointing back into the app rather than at another demo.

A demo that becomes a substitute for using the product has failed even if everyone finishes it.

Frequently asked questions

Should onboarding emails include a demo?
Yes, but one short walkthrough per email covering the single action that email asks for -- not a full product tour, which asks a new user to watch a documentary before doing anything. Three steps is usually enough.
What should each onboarding demo show?
Day 0 the first useful action, day 2 the step people get stuck on (your support queue already tells you which), day 5 the feature that makes people stay, and day 10 whatever they have not tried yet.
What can onboarding demos tell me about my product?
Per-step drop-off shows which part of your product confuses people, measured from people currently confused by it. That is stronger evidence than a survey because it is behaviour rather than opinion, and it arrives while the user is still there to help.
